WOOLRICH RETAINS HIS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
The talented Richard Woolrich from KwaZulu-Natal successfully defended his SA
Aquathlon title at Leisure Lakes in Midrand on Sunday 23 February.
Sportsvendo produced the event, which was sponsored by Telkom, Virgin Active and Energade,
under the auspices of Triathlon South Africa.
Woolrich completed the 2,5 km run, 1 000 metre swim and 2,5 km run again in an
excellent time of 31:19 to win the elite men’s category.
The runner-up in the elite category was Henk Markgraaf from the Free State in 33:26. Scott
Giles from Great Britain followed in 33:26.
Woolrich was in second place after the first run and followed Wilhelm Steyn from
Gauteng North into the water. In the swimming leg he overtook Steyn and gradually
extended his lead never to relinquish it again.
Another Kwazulu-Natal athlete and second runner up last year, Lindsay Penfold, won the
women’s event. She completed the distance in 36:20 and was closely followed by her teammate,
Catilyn Gane, in 36:29. Riana de Lange from Gauteng North was third in 37:09.
The talented youngster from KwaZulu-Natal, Gian-Nicola Dedominicis, took honours in
the under 23 category. He won in 33:19, which meant that he finished in second place
overall.
The under 23 women’s champion for 2003 is Catherine Cronje from Central Gauteng in a time of
38:48.
